LAKHIMPUR: The political parties of the State jumped in intense campaign in Lakhimpur district from Tuesday regarding Mising Autonomous Council election to be held on upcoming January 21. Amidst such environment, massive poll related violence took place at No. 20 Obonori MAC Constituency in which four BJP activists were seriously injured in an incident of attack by Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS) supporters.
As per report, on the night of January 15, a group of people led by SGS activists Sunil Payang, Krishna Payang and Durgeswar Perome violently attacked BJP activists Biswajit Pawo, Debabrat Tawo and Purandar Payang with sharp weapons while they were chalking out election campaign strategies at the yard of Katiram Payang, a resident of Obhata Sampara village under the said MAC constituency.
BJP activists Biswajit Pawo and Katiram Payang sustained serious injuries in this incident of poll related violence. In this regard, Dhakuakhona district BJP president Pradip Chamua and secretary Sarat Morang filed an FIR at Ghilamora Police Station on Wednesday. On the other hand, Biswajit Pawo also lodged an FIR at Ghilamora Police Station regarding the attack against Sunil Payang, Krishna Payang, Durgeswar Perome, Tulashi Yein, Lakhinath Perome, Tarun Taye, Tomas Pawo along with another fourteen persons, total 21, alleging their involvement in the attack. As per the FIR, Ghilamora police arrested main accused Sunil Payang registering a case under sections 147/148/448/326/307/606.
It needs to mention here that, though BJP and SGS formed alliance in the last parliamentary, legislative and panchayat polls, both parties are alone in fray for MAC election as no poll related understanding was formed between the two parties. The anti incumbency stand on the part of voters of the constituency against former MAC member of SGS, Indira Chinte Kumbang, who is in contest this time too, is considered to be the root cause of such violence at a time when a good number of SGS workers joined BJP. BJP candidate Rukmini Kuli Patir is in front foot with the joining of 200 Congress supporters who joined BJP expressing resentment against Bharat Narah and Rani Narah.
