KOKRAJHAR: MLA of 30-Kokrajhar east, Lawrence Islary on Wednesday evening visited the repair site of the Bishmuri - Saralpara road and inspected the repair works that started on Wednesday from 31 National Highway, Bishmuri. The repair works, once completed, will bring a smile on the faces of the people of the Ultapani and Saralpara areas along the Bhutan border and picnickers as Saralpara near Swrmanga river bank is an ideal and popular picnic hotspot.

The 40-km-long Bishmuri-Saralpara road which passes through the thick jungles of Chirang reserve forest, was in an extremely dilapidated condition a couple of years back. The black-top road was in a deplorable state as heavy dumpers were used to carry boulders from River Swrmanga earlier. But now boulders are not available in the river. There was bus service of Royal Bhutan from Sarpang to Kokrajhar but it was discontinued after 1992 due to security reasons and bad road condition. The Bhutanese people used to come down to Kokrajhar to buy their daily requirements and Sarpang was once the most favoured picnic destination for people from the border districts of Assam before 1995.

But now the physical structure of Sarpang town, which is also the headquarter of Sarpang Dzongkhag (DC), has changed due to massive erosion. The market area has been totally swept away, compelling the authority to shift the market.

Talking to reporters, MLA Lawrence Iskary said the Bishmuri- Saralpara road would be reconstructed under the Assam Mala project and a survey has already been carried out. He said that before the reconstruction of this road under Assam Mala begins, the BTC government had started the repair works since Wednesday as an immediate measure because the start of the Assam Mala project could take some more time.
