GUWAHATI: The Assam administration reported on Thursday that 8,632 drug traffickers had been detained in the state over the previous two years.

The BJP-led administration, according to Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, has conducted a "full-scale fight" against the drug epidemic.

She stated that as of March 2, 2023, 5,191 cases had been filed under the NDPS Act, and 8,632 drug traffickers had been taken into custody.

Neog claimed that during the current administration, traffickers' possession of 221 kg of heroin, 67,864 kg of ganja, and 3,317 kg of poppy straw was recovered. Also, she added, "203 cases of human trafficking were reported, 173 traffickers were detained, and 358 victims were rescued" through December 31, 2022.

In her budget statement, the minister noted that Assam would have zero rhino poaching in 2022 for the first time in recent memory.

On the Indo-Bangladesh international border, Border Security Force (BSF) troops foiled a smuggling attempt and apprehended one narcotics smuggler along with prohibited Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets, according to officials on Saturday. This was yet another victory in the BSF's campaign against trans-border crimes and drug trafficking.

On March 11, 2023, BSF forces of BOP Kalaicharbari Ex-49 BN BSF captured an Indian smuggler and recovered 718 outlawed Yaba tablets worth Rs 3.59 lakh from his possession, according to officials acting on valid information.

The police have received the detained smuggler and the confiscated items in preparation for further legal action.

According to an official, the Assam Police detained three people and seized 1.300 kg of heroin from a vehicle in the Karimganj area near the border with Mizoram on 10 March, Friday.

The vehicle was coming from Mizoram's side, according to Partha Pratim Das, Superintendent of Police for the Karimganj district, and police stopped it at the Kontekchera neighborhood under the jurisdiction of the Bazaricherra police station.
