Municipality Board of Dibrugarh dissolved by State Government

Dibrugarh: The State Government has dissolved the Dibrugarh Municipality Board with immediate effect on charges of several grounds, including large scale financial misappropriation, improper maintenance of main cash book, logbooks for the office vehicles, records of the assets of DMB, and illegal allotment of markets and parking place.

Pursuant to the inquiry of Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh and the report of the Director, Municipal Administration, Assam regarding the alleged allegation, the State Government, in the exercise of its power under section 298 of the Assam Municipal Act, 1956, has dissolved the DMB vide (M)/151/2009/358 dated. 25.11.19 with immediate effect and directed the Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh to take charge of the DMB

The chairperson of the DMB, Soma Chakraborty appeared before the inquiry committee and a statement of an oath was taken by the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, Government of Assam on November 4 where Chakraborty admitted that all charges were true. In view of the DMB chairperson’s statement, the government observed that the DMB under her stewardship had persistently failed to perform its duties and responsibilities to the satisfaction of all concerned. Hence, the government had no other option except to dissolve the BJP-led municipal board.

With the passing of the order, the impasse in the DMB which was created among a section BJP ward commissioners due to the chairperson’s autocratic attitude, nepotism, and huge financial scam, has come to an end. Many of them, while welcoming the government’s order, also demanded a thorough inquiry and action against all wrongdoers.
