TINSUKIA: Tinsukia police arrested a woman who was allegedly involved in the sensational gruesome murder of a journalist, Bijen Deep Tanti whose body was found inside the rented office of his web portal at Na-Pukhuri's Jyotinagar Development Area on Saturday.

Additonal SP Ripunjay Kakoti told media persons that a woman named Achanti Bag (29) had confessed before police after grilling to have committed the crime on the night of August 6 by strangulating an intoxicated Tanti with a cable. She was booked in a case no 876/2020 under 302 IPC.

Tanti (39), father of three children, including a 21-day infant and a resident of Kachujan TE near Parbotia, was Tinsukia journalist of the satellite news channel and owner of a web portal. According to family sources, Achanti Bag, an ASHA karmi and a laboratory technician of NSM's mobile unit hailing from Phillobari, had an illicit relationship with Tanti.

Ripunjay Kakoti said that she was a regular visitor to the rented house and stayed there on a number of occasions. Even the next day after the murder she was seen moving out of the rented house in the morning carrying a bag. He added that further interrogation would continue as police was granted a five-day remand by the court.

Meanwhile, the journalists' fraternity, including all press clubs in Tinsukia, and the Tinsukia District Journalists' Association have strongly condemned the incident and demanded stringent punishment to the culprit. A high-level inquiry and suitable compensation to the family was also demanded.
