GUWAHATI: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) which has undertaken a slew of measures to enhance millet production and consumption in the State of Assam, launched its model millet project at Borbeel cluster of Kathiatoli Block, Nagaon on Saturday. In keeping with the International Year of Millets 2023, NABARD is implementing its model millet project in 23 districts of the State to create awareness, and increase production and consumption of millets. It needs to be mentioned that declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets by the United Nations is an achievement of the government of India. The declaration came following a proposal by India that is gearing up to emerge as the global hub for millet, stated a press release.

Launching the project, Nabin Roy, GM, NABARD Regional Office, Guwahati said that this model project will not only ensure promotion of millet cultivation in the State, but will also address all the issues related to this particular cultivation to make it a sustainable practice in the State. "All the issues with millets cultivation like lack of knowledge, limited access to high-quality seed, low demand, lack of processing facilities, market linkage etc., will be looked into so that we can realise the vision of the government of India," said Roy.
