GAURISAGAR: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) organized an awareness meeting on Village-level Sanitation Literacy Campaign (VLSLC)-2020-21 under the aegis of NGO Krishak Nyas at Gaurisagar Bahumukhi Prakalpa Bhavan under Gaurisagar Development Block in Sivasagar district on Tuesday.
Addressing the meeting, Lakheswar Mahanta, District Development Manager (DDM), Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, emphasized that India had made rapid progress in ending open defecation across the country which was having a huge impact on improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). NABARD has been a part of this noble mission to support the government under SBM Grameen with necessary funds for construction of household toilets. NABARD has so far sanctioned and disbursed an amount of Rs 15,000 crore and Rs 12,298 crore respectively which has led to the construction of 3.29 crore household toilets. There is a need for continuous awareness creation to sustain behavioural change among the beneficiaries as well as regular maintenance for the infrastructure already created, he said. The DDM also urged upon the PRI members to extend help and cooperation and to focus on carrying out this mission in their respective areas.
The other dignitaries who attended the meeting included Hemanta Khanikar, president of Gaurisagar Anchalik Panchayat, and Manjit Phukan, educationist, social worker and recipient of the State teacher award. In the meeting, the presidents of Dikhowmukh, Kawaimari, MumaiTamuli and Morabazar Gaon Panchayats dwelt at length on the present status of village sanction in their respective GPs.
