KOHIMA: The Naga Students’ Federation has opposed the new policy regarding the implementation of the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) towards the aim of One Nation, One Student ID. This concept has been implemented along the lines of the AADHAR IDs.

Issuing a statement, the president and general secretary of the Naga Students Federation called this initiative controversial and mentioned that it would add unnecessary burdens on educational institutions across the country. They also mentioned that the proposed system poses significant challenges and concerns including putting the privacy of students at risk. It also undermines the rights of the students of the students, according to the statement. The statement also mentioned that this move of the government also raises concerns about data security and administrative burden.

The federation also mentioned that the government has not addressed the concerns over data security and privacy breaches of AADHAR and at such a time when data breaches were common adding another layer of data collection and storage without comprehensive security measures is a major source of concern adding that the proposed centrally functioning District Information for Education portal, could become a potential target for cyberattacks, endangering the personal information of the students.

The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) proposed by the National Educational Technology Forum (NETF), aims to create a database of all students across the country using the unique identification number to every student enrolled from pre-primary to higher education in addition to their existing Aadhaar ID.

Pointing out several other concerns, the Naga Students’ Forum asked the concerned department to reconsider the implementation of the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) and asked the Education Ministry to prioritize data security, address administrative challenges, and engage in a comprehensive dialogue with all stakeholders, including students and educational institutions, in order to develop a more robust and privacy-conscious solution for tracking students’ academic progress.
