JAGIROAD: The employees of Nagaon and Cachar paper mills of the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) resorted to a protest rally on Monday in front of the Nagaon Paper Mill (NPM) demanding the immediate release of their pending salaries to the tune of Rs 570 cr. The employees severely criticized Narendra Modi-led Union Government and Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma led-State Government for their casual attitude towards the fulfilment of their commitment.

They alleged that both the governments had assured them in the month of September last year of releasing the mentioned amount for payment of their year-long pending salaries.

They further alleged that the Government did not take any step in this regard even after five months. The common platform of the employees ' Joint Action Committee of the Recognised Union' (JACRU) president Manobendra Chakravarty and secretary Ananda Bordoloi stated with anger that following betrayal of the Government at New Delhi and Dispur more than 100 employees died of acute starvation.

They also criticised the government for their narrow political gain and the conspiracy hatched to sell out both the mills along with its most valuable landed property at a meagre value of Rs 375 cr from its earlier value fixed at Rs 1139 cr. This has caused deep resentment among the employees of the mills.

They also pointed out the example of the Kerala State Government where one unit of the HPC was revived after being declared closed. It is to mention here that the employees of the mills are not getting their salaries and other benefits for the last 60-70 months. They reiterated to fulfil their demands at an early date or they would go for rigorous movement.
