NAGAON, ASSAM:

An inquiry by the Guwahati police revealed yet another Assam police officer's suspected involvement with anti-social forces.

Based on confessions of an alleged gold thief during interrogation, the city police searched the official residence of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) stationed in Nagaon on Wednesday morning and confiscated jewellery and cash money.

According to reports, the ASI, Badri Prasad Barauti, has ties with anti-social elements. The police also detained the owner of Bickaner Jewelry, a jewellery store in Nagaon town, for interrogation.

The officer's wife, on the other hand, claims that her husband is clean. She also claimed that he was the victim of a conspiracy.

It should be mentioned that after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma adopted a tough stance against drugs, an Assam police DSP was nabbed for his suspected connection with illegal drug traffickers.

Similarly, a Deputy Superintendent of Police was nabbed approximately two weeks ago in Assam's Dhubri district for allegedly accepting bribes and having ties to an arrested smuggler. Following DSP Jatin Das' arrest in response to charges made by smuggler Rafiqul Pramanik, Rs 4.77 lakh in undeclared cash was also recovered. A case has been filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to police sources, Pramanik acted as the DSP's agent and reportedly collected payments on his behalf. The 59-year-old DSP is a Dhubri town native who has spent most of his tenure at several Dhubri district police stations.

In another episode of a corrupt police official getting busted, a few weeks ago the Assam Police detained a senior police official on Monday for his participation in a smuggling operation and confiscated unaccounted cash. According to a police statement, Jatin Chandra Das, a deputy superintendent of police with the border branch of Assam Police in Dhubri district, was arrested when detailed information regarding his link with smugglers was provided. The police officer was charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust by public servants, as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act.
