NAGAON: The State Health Department is all set to inaugurate the proposed Nagaon Medical College and Hospital at Mohkhuli on January 8 next year. This was informed by highly placed sources of the department concerned on Thursday here in Nagaon.
Speaking to this correspondent, the sources said during the recent visit to the district, State Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma met the district heads of the department concerned and instructed the top officials of the district health department to finalize all preparations for the inauguration of the newly-constructed medical college and hospital at Mohkhuli on January 8, 2019.
In connection with the formal opening of the medical college, no official notification or other formal order has been issued till date by the authority concerned, except the instructions of Dr Sarma. The sources added further that as per instruction of the minister, in the initial stage two units like ‘Maternity’ and ‘Child Care’ would be shifted to the proposed Nagaon Medical College at Mohkhuli from Nagaon BP Civil Hospital.
Various construction works to develop the infrastructure of the proposed medical college are still going on and other preparations for establishment of a medical college are yet to be completed by the construction agencies concerned. Under such circumstances, the instructions of the minister to the officials for opening the college have accentuated unexpected haste among the officials, the sources added.
The sources further said that standard facilities for a medical college like sufficient strength of doctors, medical staff and nurses, medical equipment and laboratory facilities were yet to be provided by the government. On the other hand, various posts of doctors, staff nurses and other medical staff, even in Nagaon BP Civil Hospital, have been lying vacant over the years. Without new appointment of doctors as well as other staff, how can the authority concerned provide sufficient doctors, nurses and medical staff in the new medical college?
