Namrup: Showing love and empathy for helpless animals, an Assam police officer has been feeding stray dogs since the clampdown of the COVID-19 restrictions. Namrup DSP Naba Kumar Bora is feeding the helpless stray dogs in order to save them from dying due to starvation. Bora along with a group of people are feeding a large number of dogs on the streets of Namrup.

"Doing police work is my duty. I am available for my office work whenever duty calls. But I manage to find time and feed the dogs. Cows can eat grass and plants. What will the dogs eat? Restaurants, hotels, roadside shops, everything is shut. When I saw the plight of the dogs I decided to start feeding them. I will continue to do this," Bora said.

Armed with buckets full of home-cooked food, paper plates, and water bottles, Bora steps out every night after his duty hours. His gesture has encouraged many youths of the area to come forward and feeding the hungry animals on the streets on Namrup.

DSP Bora said that he has received a lot of help and support from the people of Namrup. He thanked them for their encouragement and support. "People reach out to me on the phone. They have encouraged me a lot and I am thankful to them," Bora said.

The government has imposed curfew and other restrictions after the second wave of COVID-19 resulted in a large number of deaths. Due to the restrictions, hotels and restaurants, shops by the road side have been mostly shut. The street dogs mostly depend on scraps and left-over food from these shops, hotels and restaurants. Now with these shut, the stray dogs have been starving.

Assam Police is known to help people and animals. DSP Bora is just another example of the humane side of Assam Police.
