NAGAON: 'Manch - Antar' a leading amateur theatre group of the small town, with the financial assistance of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi staged 'Nangcheng - a historical ballad' penned by noted playwright and director Sapunti Bordoloi at Nagaon district library auditorium on Sunday. The show was dedicated to the fond memory of the noted physician, Assamese litterateur and theatre personality of the town Dr Dilip Kumar Baruah.

The play was directed by Suraj Kumar Saikia while music was designed by Jyotsna Devi Bordoloi. The play was scripted on inspiration of the Assamese novel 'Patkair Ipare Mur Desh' by Chandana Goswami where the protagonist of the play 'Nangcheng' an innocent and patriotic girl who incidentally turned into a 'Patmadoi' to then Ahom king Bamuni Kunwar and then abandoned by her husband.

Nangcheng fell in love with Tai Chulai Kunwar, a prince who conspired against the new Ahom king Bamuni Kunwar and tried to be the Ahom king the next. For fulfilling his political aspirations, Tai Chulai Kunwar used Nangcheng in many ways to kill the Bamuni Kunwar. When Nangcheng sniffed the truth behind Tai Chulai Kunwar's love towards her, she went ahead to save the life of her husband Bamuni Kunwar.

Meanwhile, Nangcheng confronted with the Tai Chulai Kunwar and then sacrificed herself while attacking on Tai Chulai Kunwar to protect her husband Bamuni Kunwar. She was killed finally by her former lover Tai Chulai Kunwar as she became useless for him. The overall presentation, acting as well as involvement in the characters of the play by the amateur theatre group was more attractive and adorable.

The involvement as well as acting of Natyapran Prasanta Sarma (Khumtai), Gitartha Sarma (Ahom king Bamuni Kunwar), Manoj Kumar Sarma (Tai Chulai Kunwar) Jitu Moni Mahanta ( C-n-C to the neighbouring Patkai province) and Sanjivani Bora ( Nangcheng) were mind-blowing. During the presentation of the play, a few inconvenience caused due to light and sound system of the auditorium irked the audience and sidelined the attention of the audience from the play.
