SIVASAGAR: As part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Gargaon College in collaboration with IQAC and the support of NSS Cell, Dibrugarh University observed National Girl Child Day on Monday.
At the outset, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Rimjim Borah, Programme officer of NSS, Dr Surajit Saikia, IQAC Coordinator, Dr Bidyananda Borkakoty, Head of the Department of Education, Pranab Dowerah, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Assamese, Ankika Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics and the volunteers attended the inauguration programme conducted by Dibrugarh University on a virtual platform.
Following this programme, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of the college, in his speech, elucidated the importance of National Girl Child Day and its relevance in raising the girl child as a complete human entity. He further stressed the need to create awareness on the safety, rights, importance and responsibility of the girl child among the new generation. He said that the idea of a true democratic society is achievable only when every woman is given the same rights as enjoyed by a male. Thereafter, four girl students of the college and achievers in different fields at the state and at the national level namely –Gyantrishna Phukan (Best NSS volunteer awardee at the state level for 2019-20), Rutuja Deori (Awardee at national level literary competition), Gaurangi Bhattacharya (Awardee at national level dance competition) and Prastuti Phukan ( National level Chess player) were felicitated at the event.
The programme was anchored by Dr Rimjim Borah. In her speech, she spoke of the contributions made by women since ancient times and of the necessity of creating awareness regarding liberty, equal rights and safety of women. The programme was attended by more than 150 participants including teachers, students, volunteers.
