JAMUGURIHAT:The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCB) has expressed surprise at the two days’ strike that took place on August 22 and August 23against the government’s National Pension System (NPS).

After 2005, the Government of Assam also introduced a new pension scheme to include the employees recruited, instead of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). NHRCCB has stated that the life after retirement of the employees of various departments under the State Government is uncertain. There is also a need to reconsider the pension scheme by the State Government and the Union Government as well.

Nishant Thard, the state president of NHRCCB, said the two-day strike carried out by the NPS employees of Assam through a democratic process showed the seriousness of the issue and it will harm the development of the State in all aspects. The organization sent separate letters on Wednesday to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria by e-mail to take appropriate action on this burning issue.

Thardstated in the letter that the employees in any department of the government have been rendering their services with dedication and sincerity. He said that the NPS would hamper the development of a true work culture due to lack of mental satisfaction among the government employees. He mentioned in the two letters that the future security of the employees should be ensured by reintroducing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) or amending the existing new pension policy to ensure a financially-secure retirement life for the employees.

The NHRCCB statement also said that the funds deducted from the monthly salaries of the employees of Assam under NPS for investment in the stock market have not been used properly in a timely-manner.
