DHUBRI: A national webinar was organized by Sapatgram College under the aegis of IQAC of the college on 'Yoga: Mental & Physical Well-being under Pandemic Situation' recently.
The webinar was attended by Dr. Subhojit Choudhury, HoS, Research & Development Section IIT, Guwahati, Mahasachiv Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, Assam and Dr. Pranab Kumar Chattopadhya, Retd. Professor & HoD, Department of Economics & Politics Viswa Bharati, Shantiniketan, West Bengal. Dr. Choudhury elaborately discussed physical benefits of the yogic practices.
In his deliberation he discussed in-depth how different yogic postures could cure diseases enabling practitioners to live a healthy and stress-free life. Dr. Chattopadhya emphasized the spiritual part of the yogic practices as he elaborately discussed how human soul could be connected to the cosmos or the supreme force and how yoga could calm down an unsettled mind and body. Citing verses from the Veda and Sanskrit verses, he discussed how yoga had deep roots in Indian Philosophy and it had shaped Indian way of life throughout the ages.
The webinar was chaired by Dr. Rajeshwar Prasad Singh, Principal of Sapatgram College. He said that the lockdowns during the pandemic had made human life sedentary where practicing yoga might bring greater benefits.
Earlier, the webinar was inaugurated by Dr. DK Adhikary, president of governing body, Sapatgram College. In his inaugural speech, Dr. Adhikary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on whose behest United Nations decided to declare Yoga as an international event on June 21, 2015.
Dr. G.K. Saha, organizing secretary of the webinar and IQAC coordinator, Sapatgram College, explained the objectives of the webinar as he explained the need of yogic practices during the pandemic to balance the physical and mental well-being. Dr. Ronchai Basumatary, Head of the Department of English, Sapatgram College, gave the vote of thanks with concluding remarks.
Dr. Basumatary briefly added that India was underrepresented in the world scenario until Swami Vivekananda popularized Indian Philosophy in 19th century and subsequent globalization of Yoga in 21st century. Emphasizing the importance of bringing information of yogic philosophy to younger generation, he thanked Dr. Moonmoon Banerjee, Head of the Department of Education and convener of the webinar, and the resource persons.
