Haflong: The NC Hills Indigenous Students’ Forum (NCHISF) through a press communiqué signed by Paoneilum Changsan, general secretary of NCHISF, informed that the NCHISF had unanimously agreed and resolved to call off the agitation programme which was scheduled to begin from February 17.

The press communiqué stated that in support of the long-pending demand of the NCHISF and North Cachar Hills Indigenous Women Forum (NCHIWF) for compensating the BG Line Construction affected beneficiaries by the NF Railway authority, another Rail Roko was scheduled to begin from February 17 unless and until the demand was fulfilled.

However, after the Deputy Commissioner received a letter no. W/215/CON/ Land Compensation/LMG-2 dated 15/02/2020 from the N F Railway, Maligaon and in its letter no. NCHG/D-301/2020 dated 15/02/2020, stating that the Railway Board had considered the demand for compensation and directed the General Manager (Construction), Maligaon to take decision for payment of compensation. Accordingly, the matter was being processed in the N F Railway headquarter, Maligaon to issue the compensation. However, as adequate funds are not available in the current financial year, the due payment will be made after March 31, 2020.

Keeping in mind the assurance given by the district administration in this matter, the NCHISF had decided to call off the Rail Roko programme. However, if the NF Railways failed to fulfil the demand, the NCHISF would be bound to execute the same agitation, said Changsan.
