New executive body of Boro Somaj formed in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: The new executive body of the Boro Somaj of Kokrajhar district committee was formed on Sunday in its 14th annual conference held at Khanthalguri community hall, Salakati. The new body was formed with Nitya Ranjan Brahma as president and Sonaram Boro as general secretary while Amarsing Borgoyary and Prasanta Kr Brahma became vice-presidents and Rahen Mashahary, Lalit Patgiri and Chilarai Basumatary became assistant general secretary, joint secretary and secretary respectively.

The open meeting was inaugurated by BTC EM of Sports and Youth Welfare, Doneswar Goyary, while president of the central committee of the Boro Somaj, Rajen Boro graced the occasion as the chief guest.

In his inaugural speech, BTC EM Doneswar Goyary said the Boro Somaj had vital role to play to make a decent society and uplift social status while guardians should come forward to reform the future generation and guide them in the right direction. He said that the new generation should be taken in the right direction by parents and guardians through proper education.

Goyary said Boro Somaj had been working for the rectification of society and it played an important role in settling all kinds of local disputes through customary laws in the villages, which were still in force. He also said the traditional law must be preserved as it was very important for villagers in seeking judgement and settlement of disputes as well as conducting social ceremonies. He called upon the leaders of the Somaj to take measures to educate children and to deal with the use of drugs and alcohol by youngsters.

Meanwhile, former EM of BTC, Derhasat Basumatary inaugurated the delegate sitting on the first day. The meeting also discussed the draft customary law of the Bodos and other issues of the society.
