The only airport in Guwahati, the gateway to north-East India, is all set to get a makeover very soon now as the planning, sketches and the fund allocations are all done. As per the new plans, there will be two new aerobridges, an international cargo complex and an extended canopy, a new two-level integrated terminal building and new stalls and washrooms in the airport. Once these new constructions being implemented, the Guwahati Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport will turn into an international airport very soon.
Apart from the international cargo complex on papers, another international cargo complex is already under construction by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in the airport. With these cargo complexes ready to be used, there will be an increased cargo space and convenience for the passengers and staffs. Moreover, the domestic cargo complex too is being upgraded to be capable of handling the cargo. Notably, the airport authorities handle around 22000 metric tonnes of cargo every year.
As per the new plans, a fund of Rs 12 crore has already been allocated for the construction of the aerobridges and the bridges are scheduled to be opened to the public in the coming week. Although there were two aerobridges in LGBI Airport, the addition of two new aerobridges by the airport authorities will make it more convenient for the passengers to commute with the planes.
Another new addition to the Guwahati airport is a new two-level integrated terminal building with an area of 90,000 square metres which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,232 crore. The time required for the building to be ready the serve the purpose of the passengers is around three years. As the current terminal can occupy only 1250 passengers at peak hour, its addition will certainly be a relief to the commuters and the airport staff.
The AAI has signed a contract of seven-year with some companies for the renovation of old stalls and construction of new ones. Other new additions to the airport like the food, beverage and retail stalls are to be completed by December.
