GUWAHATI: The National Green Tribunal (NTR) has recently urged the Saam government to form a committee to prepare a road map in order to fight the issue of air pollution and disposal of solid waste materials.
NTR has issued an application regarding the same. The NGT in its order stated that, the concerned committee shall keep a check on the Air Quality of the city along with other parts of Assam on a regular basis. It further asserts that it is a constitutional responsibility of all states and local authorities to ensure a pollution free environment for it’s citizens.
A resident of Guwahati submitted an application, where he highlighted the deteriorating air quality and extreme pollution in Northeast. The prime cause behind this has been mentioned as bio mass burning and vehicular pollution and constant construction activities.
After reviewing all the documentation, Central Pollution Control Board, Pollution Control Board, Environment and Forest department and few other departments advised the Chief Secretary of Assam to form a panel comprising a Commissioner, GMC, the Commissioner and Secretary PWD, Government of Assam, CEO, GMDA and so on.
The NTR also stated that, even though no deadline was served regarding the completion of Flyovers and other activities across the region, the department has now directed the state authorities to sum up all the activities by 31.12.23.
Lately the entire city of Guwahati has witnessed a massive deterioration in air quality index. Citizens across the region are breathing polluted air every second, which is causing several difficulties in their lives. Many Guwahati-bound flights have been turned back towards Kolkata because of low visibility on 8th of February.
According to the reports, Air Asia Flight 9I 743, Spice Jet flights SJ 696 along with SJ 216 moved back to Kolkata on Wednesday. Furthermore, flight Akasha and flybig airlines were also diverted due to extremely low visibility. Apart from this, the Enforcement Branch of GMC carried out a drive on 6th of February, in various construction sites of Guwahati.
As per the reports, the dust which is accumulating from the construction sites has given rise to vigorous air pollution in the city. Prior to this, the Superintendent of GMCH through his twitter shared his views regarding the current situation. "Guwahati is so dry.No rains for 3 months. My personal opinion is GMC should water the plants, trees, and sprinkle the roads so that dust allergy does not take the upper hand. We are seeing lots of Respiratory tract infections these days.I think it is possible with the mighty Brahmaputra.", he tweeted.
