LAKHIMPUR: Due to lack of proper maintenance and repair work for long time, NH-15 has turned dilapidated in Jonai subdivision of Dhemaji district. Large potholes on the 25-km long stretch of the highway from Dekapam to Demou-Gulai covering Dekapam, Bibari, Simen Chapori, Dipa, Demou areas under the subdivision have turned the condition of the highway very pathetic. The potholes on the highway have affected plying of all kinds of vehicle, be it heavy or light, and the deplorable condition of the highway has made people suffer a lot.
Notably, NH-15 plays a pivotal role from the communication point of view in North Assam covering four districts, viz- Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Sonitpur. It also connects the most important Indo-China border and Arunachal Pradesh with the rest of the country. Therefore, the highway can be termed as the lifeline of North Assam from the communication point of view.
The highway is also unquestionably important from the nation's security point of view. A number of military vehicles ply along the highway daily to the army camps located at Rajakhana of Jonai, Pachighat of Arunachal Pradesh. In addition to the military vehicles, a large number of other civil vehicles also move to Siyang district of the State of Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the native State.
Under such circumstances, the Dhemaji district units of United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO), All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), Jonai district units of Takam Mising Porin Kebang, Jonai subdivisional unit Sonowal Kachari Students' Union have demanded the authority concerned and the governments to repair the highway at the earliest.
