LAKHIMPUR: Namoni Subansiri Bandh Birodhi Sangrami Aikya Mancha has taken a determined stand to stop the construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) set up by the NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh of the Dhemaji-Arunachal border area.
The organization, which is the common forum of 25 organizations of the State, once again declared its dead set stand to stop the contentious big river dam on Wednesday. The organization burnt the effigy of NHPC Limited, staging massive protest against the project at the centre of Laluk Tiniali in Lakhimpur district. By indulging in the agitation programme, the organization warned the NHPC Limited not to step forward to resume the construction work of the project which has been halted since 2011. Participating in the programme, one of the chief conveners of the forum and Lakhimpur district general secretary of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad (AJYP) affirmed that they would not allow NHPC to devastate the Subansiri valley under Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and to destroy the life and properties of the downstream people by completing the construction of the 2000MW SLHP being established in a highly seismic zone. "We will keep a close watch on the transportation of SLHP construction materials by NHPC to the dam site each and every moment. We will block them with our united strength," he stated in front of the media while staging the protest.
On the other hand, another chief convener of the forum, central committee organizing secretary of Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM), Anupam Saikia declared that the activists would stop the construction by making supreme sacrifices to save the native people of the districts.
Notably, the activists of the partner organizations of the common forum took their stand along NH-15 in order to block the SLHP construction materials at Tuesday night. The protesters blocked a truck and a 50-wheeler trailer carrying a large electrical transformer of 31.5 MVA 132/33 power at Banderdewa of the district and staged demonstration at the main centre of Laluk Tiniali. As a result, two vehicles were stranded on the NH-15 at Banderdewa for the night and the Wednesday morning.
