LAKHIMPUR: The NHPC is all set to commission the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project (SLHEP), the big river dam project being constructed at Gerukamukh, by March 2022. At present, the NHPC is constructing the project with the capacity of producing 2000 Mega Watt (MW) on a war-footing. With this purpose, the transportation of project machineries and construction materials continues to the project site at night regularly.

Five vehicles carrying the parts of project machineries arrived in Lakhimpur on Tuesday. Following this, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) demonstrated on the NH-15 at LalukTiniali and staged massive protest against NHPC and demanded the closure of the construction of the project. The protest continued till night. However, NHPC managed to transport the vehicles concerned to the project site with the support of the Lakhimpur district administration after police arrested the protesting AJYCP activists at 2:00 am on Tuesday. Police arrested AJYCP central committee assistant general secretary Sourabh Das along with Lakhimpur district unit president HiranyaDutta, general secretary DebojitDekaBaruah and other leaders while taking part in the protest. However, the arrested AJYCP dignitaries and activists were released on Wednesday morning.

In the wake of this development, AJYCP has condemned the governments at the Centre and the State for initiating moves to commission the big river dam project while completely ignoring the public protest.

Notably, NHPC CMD Abhay Kumar Singh, on December 4, gave assurance to SanjivNandanSahai, the Union Secretary (Power), that the SLHEP would be commissioned by March 2022. This assurance was given to him at a review meeting of the project held at the project site at Gerukamukh with a central team led by SanjibNandanSahai. The Union Secretary (Power) also asked the employees to work with maximum zeal to complete the project as per schedule.
