JAMUGURIHAT: Newspapers play an immense role in the smooth running of a state or society and journalists are the driving forces of newspapers. It is time to provide financial guarantee to journalists in Assam.
The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) State president Nishant Thard has sent a letter to the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard. In the press release sent by the State Media Officer of NHRCCB, Mrinmay Kumar Nath, it was stated that journalists work day and night to send news to their respective newspaper houses. They also play an important role in building a clean society. But it is difficult for them to support their families with the meagre income they receive. The letter urged the Chief Minister to provide a satisfactory monthly financial assistance to journalists who have adopted media as their livelihood.
The statement also said that journalists have respect in the society which prevents them from pursuing other income sources. The letter expressed the hope that the government would take necessary steps to help the families of media persons. Without financial security, the people engaged in this profession will serve without mental satisfaction, the state president of the NHRCCB said in the letter.
