Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has charge-sheeted 7 United Liberation Front of Asom insurgents including Arunodoi Dahotia and Rupom Asom for the killing of Assam Police sub-inspector Bhaskar Kalita back in 2018.

The NIA filed its charge its charge sheet against Bijit Gogoi alias Arunodoi Dahotia alias Arunodoi Asom, Kanto Bora alias Rupon Asom, Santosh Gogoi, Jushinta Moran alias Yangkho Asom, Bubul Moran alias Tiger Asom, Dipankar Borah alias Ghutuk, and Mamun Dihingia.

The NIA in a statement said that it found that this act was committed by a group of ULFA militants as a part of a conspiracy hatched by the accused persons on the instruction of the ULFA leader Arundoi Asom. In pursuance of the conspiracy, the group of ULFA militants comprising Kanto Bora, Santosh Gogoi, Bubul Moran, Jushinta Moran, and another ULFA militant Rudreshwar Baruah (deceased), came from their camp in Myanmar to Tinsukia district armed with assault weapons, IEDs, explosive powder, with an aim of raising funds for ULFA and committing terrorist acts at various places in Assam. Police officer Bhaskar Kalita was killed by the ULFA militants while attempting to thwart the "conspiracy", the NIA further added.

The incident in question occurred on May 4, 2018, when Bordumsa OC Bhaskar Kalita, received specific input regarding the presence of a group of suspected ULFA militants inside a house at Kujupathar Village under the Bordumsa police station.

Accordingly, a joint operation by Police and paramilitary was launched against the hiding insurgents. During the process of cordoning off the suspect premises, ULFA militants hiding inside a locked house opened fire on police, which resulted in the Kalita's death.

As per the NIA, the accused Dipankar Borah alias Ghutuk and Mamun Dihingia, were over-ground workers of the ULFA and had provided logistical support to the group of ULFA militants.

Taking advantage of poor light conditions, the ULFA militants managed to escape into the nearby jungle. Moreover, while escaping, they snatched away an AK-47 rifle from the deceased police officer. The case was initially investigated by Assam Police till June 2019, but the NIA took over the case and re-registered the same as RC 09/2018/NIA/GUW.
