GUWAHATI: In what may be described as a very proud moment for Assam, nine mountaineers of the state have succeeded in climbing the peak of Jogin III mountain of Garhwal Himalaya recently.
The nine mountaineers, who achieved the grand feat under the leadership of Manash Barooah, climbed the mountain at 8:30am on August 26. A pre-Everest expedition, the journey was sponsored by the Government of Assam. The persons who were a part of the expedition are – Manash Barooah, Upen Chakraborty, Shekhar Bordoli, Rubi Borah, Kaushik Das, Jayanta Nath, Krishna Basumatary, Bhaskar Baruah and Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika. A mountain in Garhwal Himalaya, Uttarakhand, Jogin III is at an elevation of 20,066 ft (6116 metres).
In May, 2013, two mountaineers of the state had climbed the Mount Everest within a period of one week. The mountaineers who achieved the feat were Tarun Saikia (who had climbed the Mount Everest on May 18, 2013) and Manish Deka (who achieved the feat on May 24). Four other mountaineers of the Northeast region – N. Chingkhienganba, A. Robert, N. Bidyapati and David Zohmang had also scaled the Everest in that expedition. Chingkhienganba, Bidyapati and Robert belong from Manipur, while Zohmang belongs from Mizoram.
In 1969, Assam had its first expedition to the Mount Everest when two mountaineers – Rohini Kumar Bhuyan and Atanu Prasad Baruah – attempted to climb the mountain, however, they failed to do so. Another climber from Assam Pranoy Bordoloi had tried reaching the Everest in May, 2012, but inclement weather conditions forced him to return back from 4,500 feet away from the top.
