Tezpur: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held on Tuesday at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office. The meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Narsing Pawar, discussed several issues related to road safety in Sonitpur district in presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner KK Sarma, DTO Umesh Chandra Sharma, Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. Krishna Kemprai, DIPRO Neena Baruah, officials from NHIDCL, PWD (Rural), various stakeholders and heads of various departments.
In the meeting, it was resolved to intensify the drive against two-wheeler riders without helmets and the administration will also enforce a 'No helmet, no fuel' rule throughout the district from July 1. The Deputy Commissioner asked the DTO to issue a directive to all petrol/ fuel pumps in the district not to supply fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed the departmental officials concerned to form a joint verification team to identify the causes behind the rising number of road accident in the district. He also directed the NHIDCL and PWD (NH) authorities to finish carrying out repair and maintenance work on the national highways at the earliest keeping in mind the problems faced by commuters.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed the District Transport Officer, Umesh Chandra Sharma to intensify the drive against illegal e-rickshaws plying on the streets and asked the traffic authorities to chalk out a designated route plan for plying of e-rickshaws with a view to address the rising vehicular congestion in Tezpur town. Superintendent of Police, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, who was also present in the meeting, informed that a joint eviction drive would be carried out soon to remove all encroachment from footpaths which pose a big problem for pedestrians. The Deputy Commissioner also asked the municipality board representatives to chalk out a proper parking plan for the town area.
