“No one has time for Rahul Gandhi”: Says Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Rahul Gandhi's exclusion from the Lok Sabha is the subject of ongoing protests, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that no one has time for the party leader. Assam's chief minister told the media, "Everyone is busy doing their business; no one has time for Rahul Gandhi." 

"If Rahul Gandhi had apologised, he wouldn't have faced any consequences, but he chose not to. His arrogance is the cause of this”, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated. Rahul Gandhi's in-person appeal in Surat court against his conviction in the 2019 defamation case was also criticised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday. 

He claimed that Gandhi's appearance in court revealed his arrogance. “Had you gone there to flaunt your conceit, exert pressure on the legal system, or ominously threaten the investigative agencies?” BJP leader remarked in a media interview. 

Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, was accompanied to the Gujarat court on Monday by a number of top figures, including the chief ministers of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party's leader and sister of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, was granted bail on Monday by a Surat Sessions Court. 

Gandhi had appealed his conviction in a criminal defamation case stemming from his "Modi surname" remark made during a political campaign in April 2019. On Monday, Rahul Gandhi appeared in court and appealed his March 23 conviction.

On May 3, there will be a hearing about the appeal of his criminal defamation conviction. Prior to losing his seat in Parliament, he had been found guilty in the case and given a two-year term. The party is very optimistic that the court will overturn his conviction and restore his ability to serve as a Lok Sabha member.  Abhishek Singhvi, a Rajya Sabha MP, has "supervised, controlled, and advised" this appeal.
