North Lakhimpur Municipal Board bans single-use plastic items, Punitive measures against violators under relevant Act

LAKHIMPUR: North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) has enforced ban order on the use of various kinds of plastic items in the municipal area concerned as per Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021. In this connection, Casio Karan Pegu, ACS, the Executive Officer of the NLMB issued a notification vide No. NLMB(G).22/2023-2024/110 on Wednesday.

Things that have come under the banned list as per the order are any kind of single use plastic items like earbuds with plastic cup, plastic plate, plastic spoon, plastic pipe, plastic cover of chocolate, plastic ice cream sticks, thermocol for decoration or PVC banner etc. Moreover, plastic with less than 120 microns in thickness like plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, straws, trays, wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets single-use carry bags with the same thickness and their manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use have also been banned as per the order.

The Executive Officer of the NLMB already ensured the ban order across the municipal area concerned. Any violation of this regulation will attract penalty under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, including seizure of goods, levying of environmental compensation and closure of the operation, as deemed fit.
