SIVASAGAR: Pabitra Kumar Achowe, a resident of Christian Patty in Sivasagar town, died at the age of 69 at the Cancer Institute in Dibrugarh at 12.10 pm on Tuesday.
Achowe, popularly known as Kabul among all, was born on March 10, 1953. Born in a cultural home, Achowe’s father, Hilton Achowe, was also a well-known photographer and once charming actress in the Assamese film industry, Eva Achowe was his aunt (sister of his father). Achowe completed graduation after doing his primary education from No.1 Town LP School and matriculation and higher secondary from Sivasagar Government Higher Secondary & Multipurpose School in Sivasagar.
Kabul, who was associated with various social and spiritual events, started a private school called Sophy Mercy Memorial School in Christian Patty with the help of his wife. Pabitra Kumar Achowe, who had been involved in various social, cultural, political and spiritual activities, was also a government-nominated member of the Sivasagar Municipal Board in the late 70s and early 80s. He supported many charitable works during his lifetime and supported the Jorhat Christian Medical College as chairman and member of the board for several years. He also served on the board of the Christian Literature Centre.
Pabitra Kumar Achowe was also a member of the Central Baptist Mandali in Sivasagar and had contributed a lot for its development. He had served as president, secretary of the Sivasagar Central Baptist Mandali as well as president of the Deacon Board.
Various organizations of Sivasagar, such as Sibsagar Press Club, Sivasagar District Journalists’ Association, e-Media Association, ATASU, Sivasagar Municipal Board, Sivasagar Central Baptist Church, etc and individuals have expressed deep grief over the death of Achowe. His last rites were performed on Wednesday at Christian Cemetery at Babupatty in Sivasagar town. He leaves behind his wife, a daughter, son, son-in-law and a host of relatives.
