GUWAHATI: A notorious dacoit was gunned down by police in Bilasipara in Assam on Saturday. The deceased dacoit was identified as Boga Saidar Ali.

As per reports, checkposts between Chapar and Salkocha areas in Bilasipara were set up by police to nab some dacoits on Saturday night. After the dacoits, including Ali, arrived there, they tried to flee away from the spot after seeing the police personnel. The cops thereafter chased them and a shootout took place in which one of the dacoits Ali was killed. The other dacoits managed to escape, reports said.

A pistol and several cartridges were seized by the police from the site where the shootout took place.

It may be mentioned that a suspected arms smuggler who was arrested in a joint operation by Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Police in Karimganj district in August this year was killed in an encounter a few hours after the arrest while he was trying to escape from police custody. The deceased, Nurul Islam, and another man H Liang Khiyamon were arrested for carrying illegal arms while onboard the Silchar-Guwahati train at Assam's Badarpur. Islam was killed around midnight at the Marjatkandi area under Badarpur police station when he attempted to escape, police had claimed.

Acting on a tip-off, BSF and Assam Police jointly recovered 5 pistols, including four 7.65 mm pistols and a pen pistol from 31-year-old Islam, a resident of Baraigram area of the Karimganj district and 22-year-old Khiyamon, a resident of Tuensang district in Nagaland, during a search at Silchar-Guwahati passenger train. The duo was arrested for smuggling arms, police had said.
