SIVASAGAR, ASSAM:
Bubu Konwar, Sivasagar's most wanted feared dacoit, was assassinated in a shootout with police near Geleky.
He claimed to have killed 42 people over the years and was responsible for a number of high-profile murders in the state.
According to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) GP Singh, the dreaded gang kingpin was injured in an encounter near Geleky, which is considered a big accomplishment for the Assam Police. According to the ADGP, the officers brought him to a hospital where he died from his injuries.
According to police sources, Bubu was a key suspect in about 42 murder cases that occurred throughout the state. He was also reportedly involved in a huge number of cases including car theft, illicit drug trafficking, abduction, honey-trapping, illegal arms trafficking, fake currency circulation, and other crimes.
He was arrested in 2016 for car theft. He was also charged with the murders of Congress politician Hemanta Barua and Dr. Mridul Barua in 2006. Born in Nagaland, the feared dacoit frequently fled to the neighbouring state after committing atrocities in Assam.
"One veteran criminal, Bubu Konwar, has been grievously injured in exchange of fire with police at Geleky in Sibsagar when he targeted the police team. He has been taken to hospital. One pistol has been recovered from his possession," special DGP GP Singh tweeted on Wednesday night.
"Bubu Konwar succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at Geleky civil hospital," he added later.
According to authorities, the incident occurred when Konwar, who was on a scooter with an acquaintance, tries to escape a police checkpoint and shot at the officers. His accomplice was able to flee.
Recently in March this year, the infamous Kingpin of Upper Assam was arrested by the Assam Police and 35 grams of supposed 'brown sugar' was recovered from him. He managed to get out on bail.
He had already been arrested in November 2016 in connection with car theft. That's when he told TV cameras he was a contract killer who had killed 42 people for money.
Konwar, who began with minor thefts and robberies at the age of 16, progressed to car thefts, murders, kidnappings, and extortion. He was detained numerous times but was always released on bond.
Kunwor is accused of murdering eminent doctor Mridul Baruah (2006), Congress politician Hemanta Baruah (2008), businessman KL Ginoria (2012), and school headmaster DN Gogoi (2014).
However, there were seven murder cases, 16 under the provision of the Arms Act, and 27 incidents of car theft recorded against Kunwor, according to police data.
Interestingly, Konwar lost three fingers on his right hand 13 years ago while attempting to make a crude bomb at home.
