Novelist Nirupama Borgohain Receives a D.Litt From Dibrugarh Varsity

GUWAHATI/DIBRUGARH: The prestigious degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) (Honoris Causa) was awarded to renowned author and literary figure Nirupama Borgohain by Dibrugarh University today, on Thursday.

The ceremony for awarding the degree took held in Borgohain's home in Guwahati, where it was given to her by Dibrugarh University's registrar Paramananda Sonowal and vice chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika.

The honorary degree of D.Litt. was to have been awarded to Borgohain by the Vice President of India and the Chief Guest of the XXI Convocation of Dibrugarh University on May 3, 2023, in the presence of the Chancellor of the University, the Chief Minister of Assam, and several other eminent personalities; however, she was unable to attend the convocation ceremony held on the university grounds due to certain health issues. Because of this, it was ultimately agreed to award Borgohain with the degree at her home.

At the XXI Convocation, Dibrugarh University chose the renowned Assamese author Borgohain to receive an honorary degree. The university administration made the thoughtful decision to confer the honorary degree at her home, ensuring that her contributions to literature were properly acknowledged. The Vice-Chancellor and Registrar arrived at Borgohain's home, where his family and well-wishers greeted them cordially before the ceremony officially began.

As the Dibrugarh University officials entered the area, there was a palpable air of excitement and expectancy. Prof. Jiten Hazarika spoke to the group, underlining Borgohain's significant contributions to Assamese literature and her influence on the local literary scene. He applauded her literary accomplishments, which include novels, short tales, and essays that have held readers' attention for years.

"Nirupama Borgohain's literary prowess and commitment to the preservation of Assamese culture have been truly remarkable. Her works have not only enriched our literary heritage but also served as a source of inspiration for generations of writers. It is an honor for us to confer the D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) Degree upon her today." the Vice-Chancellor said on behalf of Dibrugarh University.

In the midst of applause, Borgohain graciously took the vice chancellor's honorary degree and expressed his gratitude. Smt. Borgohain conveyed her sincere appreciation to Dibrugarh University for bestowing such a magnificent accolade upon her.

After Nirupama Borgohain and her family gladly hosted the celebration, the Registrar gave a vote of thanks to them to complete the ceremony.

The outstanding literary accomplishments of Nirupama Borgohain have made her an inspiration for budding authors and a source of cultural pride for the Assamese people, it should be noted. The awarding of the D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) Degree by Dibrugarh University not only acknowledges her outstanding achievements but also strengthens the institution's dedication to recognising literary quality.
