Nowgong College celebrates platinum jubilee

NAGAON: “A society, a nation or a country will never be powerful without better education. Hence, we should always give topmost priority to education,” Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday while addressing the open session of the platinum jubilee celebration of Nowgong College held at the college auditorium. Remembering the unparalleled contribution of personalities like Motiram Bora, Haladhar Bhuyan, Lalit Baruah and Mahi Chandra Bora for the transition of Nowgong College, Chief Minister Sonowal said that in the last seven decades, the college had traversed a long distance and transformed itself into a centre of excellence of higher education. He also called upon the teaching as well as the student community of the college to take a resolute decision to make Nowgong College one of the leading colleges in the country. Referring to the contribution of the district, Sonowal said that Nagaon district had contributed a lot for building a modern India.

Speaking on the unique bio-diversity of the State, Chief Minister Sonowal said that Assam was a land of unique flora and fauna which could also boast of being the hub of organic farming. He said the State government was working on a larger framework to utilize the verdant organic resources of the State judiciously. The government had already taken the decision to plant 10 crore saplings of various local fruits and medicinal plants. He also thanked Nowgong College for starting plantation programme as a core component of the platinum jubilee celebration. He also called upon the larger fraternity of Nowgong College to come forward and help to mould the society against superstition with the help of available technology.

Synchronixing with the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal felicitated three students of the college as recognition to their outstanding results. State Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLA Rupak Sarma, Bimal Bora, Member Secretary of SLAC for students and youth welfare, Lakhya Konwar, Principal of the college, Dr. Sarat Borkotoky and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Earlier, Assam Governor Prof Jagadish Mukhi on Tuesday morning inaugurated the opening ceremony of the platinum jubilee celebration of Nowgong College. Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Prof Mukhi said that Nowgong College had played a big role in the field of education in the State.
