Guwahati: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has suspended the Deputy General Manager of the department of instrumentation, Nihar Prasad Sharma, after he was arrested on charges of rape.

Sharma was accused of rape by a fellow female employee who claimed that the DGM had spiked her drink after inviting her to his official quarter inside the campus of the Numaligarh Refinery Limited. An FIR was lodged with the Numaligarh police station in the Golaghat district on August 20, 2021. Sharma had been absconding but was later arrested from his residence in Guwahati later that night.

The victim who is an engineer at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) alleged that she was drugged before the DGM made efforts to sexually harass her. Sharma had invited her over on the pretext of regularizing her job.

The police launched an operation to arrest Sharma as soon as the FIR was lodged. However, the DGM was found to be missing from his official residence. The Golaghat Police soon arrested him in Guwahati.

Sharma had reportedly tested positive for coronavirus and has been admitted to a hospital in Golaghat.

As per reports, the oil company had tried to suppress the matter after the victim had lodged a complaint against Sharma with the higher authorities of Numaligarh Refinery Limited. The employees's association had also registered a complaint to bring the matter to the attention of NRL's Chief General Manager. This has led to the suspension of the Deputy General Manager from NRL.

Many parties and organizations have reportedly come together to protest against the incident and bring justice to the victim.
