Educationist Pramode Chandra Chakravarty, who in a wide-ranging career started the first Inter-University Debating Competition as Student Union Secretary at Cotton College in 1958, taught in Nalbari College and later became Principal, authored many articles in dailies, died on Thursday in his Sugam Path residence. He was 84.

Family members stated that he suffered a massive heart attack early in the morning and was taken to a nearby hospital where he breathed his last. He taught Economics at Nalbari College from 1964 to 1990, headed the college from 1990 to 1996, became a member of the Assam Public Service Commission from 1996 to 2002, headed Narengi Anchalik College from 2005 to 2009.

He was the current president of the Assam Retired College Association. He held many posts and positions in his illustrious career. Chakravarty leaves behind his wife, a daughter, two sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
