TINSUKIA: Tinsukia district administration and Oil India Limited (OIL) jointly resolved the crisis on Sunday that had arisen following suicide of a camp inmate- Khukleswar Neog (53) at Baghjan on Saturday over non-receipt of damage compensation. The DSP (Hq) Bitul Chetia played a pivotal role in negotiating with the violent protesters.
Buckling under pressure from the locals, the OIL finally agreed on the demand to pay compensation to the bereaved family of Neog whose house was partially damaged by BGN 5 oil well blowout. Blaming the OIL for his death, the locals, including activists of Baghjan Milan Jyoti Sangha, refused to perform his last rites till their demands were met. Following written assurances from Tinsukia district administration and OIL, the mortal remains of Neog were cremated on Sunday evening.
Neog's family will receive one-time compensation of Rs 10 lakh from OIL. While his wife will be suitably rehabilitated, the educational expenditure for his five daughters will be taken care of, the modalities of which will be decided jointly by Tinsukia district administration and OIL in due course of time, stated Bitul Chetia.
