TINSUKIA: After a pursuing for almost 10 days, the Tinsukia police busted a deep rooted oil pilferage racket on Sunday night involving an oil tanker bearing number NL 02K 7618 which was seized during illegal extraction of oil from an OIL pipeline at Langkashi under Bordubi PS in Tinsukia district on May 26 following the arrest of 3 oil thieves including a journalist. The racket in active connivance with OIL security, police, journalists and organisations had been going on for long, said police.
Briefing media persons on Monday, ASP(Crime) Moinul Islam said the entire racket was being controlled from Guwahati in 3 tiers with a set of people empowered to execute the job. Though 3 persons have been arrested so far and identified as Birbal Gohain of Amritpur Makum and Jhantu Moran of Dhulijan Gaon Bordubiand Amrit Gogoi of Borpathar Tinsukia, the latter being a Tinsukia-based journalist of DA News Plus, more arrest will follow after police launched massive operation at Guwahati, informed Islam adding that a long list of culprits has been prepared. While Amrit Gogoi was entrusted to appoint a middle man to ‘manage’ police, journalists, organisations and influential people, on the other hand the accused Birbal Gogoi was empowered to ‘manage’ OIL security, drilling of pipes, filling of oil, recruitment of locals etc informed Islam. He also elaborated as to how the cut money was received by various parties at every step from the sale of 24000 litres capacity of an oil tanker. Islam also did not rule out supply of pilfered oil to tea gardens to run boilers and metaling of roads besides police would also look into the properties of oil thieves amassed out of pilfered oil within the ambit of investigation. A case was registered at Bordubi PS vide c/ no 67/2023 u/s 379 IPC r/w sec 3 (2) (b) PDPP act r/w sec 15(2) PMP Act r/w sec 7 EC Act.
