Ojapali artistes get a helping hand from Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das

MANGALDAI: Ojapali – a performing folk culture – is an integral part of Darrangi culture of Darrang district but the folk artistes are a neglected lot. Though the folk artistes are passing their days in constant poverty, they are carrying forth this culture without caring for their financial condition. In the nationwide lockdown period, as with everyone else, these folk artistes too have been compelled to face rough weather.

On realizing the poor plight of these folk artists, Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das has come forward with a helping hand at the hour of crisis. With the cooperation of the newly formed "Darrang and Udalguri Ojapali Association", Guru Jyoti Das recently organized a unique function at the courtyard of Dahi College maintaining social distance.

A total of 250 Ojapali artistes assembled at the function. Taking part in the function, legislator Das offered them a packet containing essential food items, masks and hand sanitizers. He also apprised them of the need for observing the guidelines and the instructions issued by the government in fighting against Covid 19. The legislator also assured them to extend all possible help and cooperation to the performing folk artistes at this hour of need. Office bearers of BJP namely Amarendra Sarma, Mrinal Saharia, Premada Bhuyan and Nila Barua also attended the function.
