Guwahati: Tokyo Olympic Bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain on Wednesday was appointed as DSP in Assam Police.

The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday had announced that he would hand over the appointment letter to her at Janata Bhawan.

He further asserted that the appointment is as per our government's new sports policy.

Meanwhile, taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Assam Police too welcomed her and said, ''Welcome Aboard! Heartiest Congratulations to @LovlinaBorgohai on being appointed as a Dy.SP in Assam Police. Your presence will surely help us in our mission towards friendly policing in the State.''

Lovlina Borgohain, the 23-year-old boxer, who became a household name after winning Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, received a rousing welcome at Gauhati Airport, however, the tough boxer in the ring, looked disappointed, as she shared her dissatisfaction on failing to win a gold medal.

Borgohain, who clinched a bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics in the women's 69kg welter-weight category, after landing in Guwahati, where Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received her at the LGBI airport.

 "With pride and glory, I welcomed our star Olympian medallist Lovlina Borgohai at Guwahati airport. Lovlina has ignited a billion dreams with her success at Tokyo Olympics 2020 and set an example for budding sports talents in rural areas to aspire for achieving big at the world stage," the Assam CM had tweeted, while welcoming the Olympic medallist.

Apart from CM Sarma, Assam Sports Minister Bimal Bora and Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh were also present at the airport.

She had expressed her dissatisfaction during a media brief at the airport, where she asserted that she would be fully satisfied only after winning Gold at the Olympics.

"I am not satisfied yet. Had I won the Gold at Tokyo, I would have been fully satisfied with my efforts. I will keep up my hard work so that I can win gold at the next Olympics," said Borgohain.

However, she thanked the people of Assam and said that she was happy that many people had come to receive her. ''I have won the Olympic bronze medal because of your blessings," she expressed.

In the quarter-final, Lovlina was competing against former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Taiwan, against whom the Indian had suffered losses. But the pugilist from Assam was better prepared this time around and finally brought a smile on everyone's face by clinching a bronze medal.

Speaking on Lovlina's achievement, Lakhya Konwar, General Secretary of Assam Olympic Association, on Wednesday said that she is a living legend.

"For me, she is a living legend, and tomorrow (August 12) is a historical day for the state. The Pride of Assam shall arrive. There shall be a surprise gift for Lovlina at tomorrow's function which the Chief Minister shall announce on the stage. There shall be cash reward or more as per states sports policy" he added.

Hemanta Kalita, Secretary-General of Boxing India had said that boxing has always made Assam proud as Boxers for Assam have represented the country in 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympics in the likes of Shiva Thappa and Lovlina Borgohain.
