Omicron Scare: Number of Infected Persons Rise to 9 in Assam

GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 pandemic situation has turned gloomy in Assam in the year 2022 as the number of infected persons is escalating by the day. Besides, the number of Omicron infected people in the state is also rising.

According to the latest government data, the state has reported 9 Omicron cases so far which was earlier 2.

Meanwhile, the state government has fully prepared the public health infrastructure to provide appropriate treatment to the COVID-19 patients.

"We are fully prepared to deal with the situation. Under the GMCH two thousand beds are kept for the COVID-19 patients," said Dr Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of the Guwahati Medical College & Hospital.

Dr Sarma also said that the severity of the Omicron is lesser than the Delta variant of the COVID-19. According to him, this happens due to the government massive vaccination drive. Despite that, he appealed to the people to abide by COVID-19 protocols appropriately.

Dr Sarma informed the media that 3 Omicron infected persons in the state have already tested negative and they were released from hospitals. " One Omicron patient was admitted in the GMCH. He already tested negative and as such he was discharged from the hospital. The other 6 Omicron cases have been reported from Upper Assam. The state first two Omicron patients also tested negative later," he added.

The GMCH Superintendent said that 230 COVID-19 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Out of them, only 10 patients have been given the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) treatment.

Earlier, the State government apprehended that the daily Covid-19 positive cases may go up to ten thousand in the third wave. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will review all aspects of the pandemic with all stakeholders tomorrow, taking the would-be situation into account.
