JAMUGURIHAT: One Pramod Bhattacharya, a resident of Old Centre, Sootea died of Japanese Encephalitis on Wednesday night at a private hospital at Tezpur. He was 86.

Bhattacharya was admitted to a private hospital as he suffered from fever and cough on July 9. His blood sample was collected on July 12 but before the result came, the patient died on Wednesday night. On Thursday, the result of his blood test came which stated him to be positive for JE.

After the news, the medical team became alert and immediately conducted blood tests of his family members. But no one was found to be JE positive, stated Dr. Bipul Saikia, medical and health officer of Sootea PHC. Dr. Saikia further added that regular smoking drives in the adjoining areas, including Bhelouguri, Balidonga, Patar Gaon, Balijiri, Balijan and at Nagsankar would be carried out from Friday onwards along with medication drives of mosquito nets.
