Assam: One killed in elephant attack in West Karbi Anglong

The incident took place at around 3 am in Bagisadubi village around 4 kilometers from Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong. Ombahadur's brother in law said that Ombahadur stepped out for wash room at around 3 am while he was attacked by the wild elephant and lost his life on the spot.

Later, police and the forest personnel arrived at the spot and the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem. The elephant enters the village in search of food.

The villagers are terrified of the elephant poaching that has been going on in the area for the past few days.

Earlier in 2019 an elephant, named after slain terrorist Osama bin Laden had killed five people, including three women, during a 24-hour rampage through the Goalpara district.

Conflict between people and elephants is not a new phenomenon. Assam has been witnessing a growing number of human-elephant conflicts. Many have lost their lives during human-elephant conflicts.

Most of these casualties have been reported from the districts of Baksa Sonitpur, Golaghat, Udalguri, Goalpara, Nagaon and Karbi Anglong.

According to wildlife activists, a rise in the encroachment of forest areas has resulted in habitat damage, forcing the pachyderms to come down to the plains in search of food and water, which caused human casualties and destruction of houses and crops.

Over 2,300 people has been killed by elephants across the country over the last six years.
