Guwahati: In an alarming development, an ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) pipe has exploded occurred today at Geleki in Nazira of Assam's Sivsagar district.

According to reports, the ONGC pipeline explosion took place at ONGC Rig No. 2 in Seoj Chapori. However, the ONGC has been able to curtail the gas emissions that occurred after the pipe blast.

After the occurrence of the ONGC pipe explosion, some of the locals in the area have been shifted to outside as a preemptive measure.

This blast has occurred against the backdrop of the blowout of the no. 5 well at the Baghjan drilling site of the Oil India Limited (OIL) in Upper Assam's Tinsukia.

The well no. 5 had suffered a blowout during a workover operation, or maintenance work, to locate a new reservoir, on May 27. The well, which has been continually spewing gas and oil, caught fire on June 9, killing two firefighters. But floods, technical glitches, as well as burn injury of three foreign experts while attempting to douse the flames have led to several delays.

Indian as well as foreign experts are currently carrying out well-capping operations at the Baghjan blowout site. The operations, however, suffered a severe setback when an Athey Wagon, a type of hydraulic lift used to fight oil-field fires consisting of a track-mounted boom with a hook in one end, fell down.
