SIVASAGAR: Gender sensitization can go a long way in bringing the desirable changes in the overall development of the nation as well as across the globe. In keeping with such pressing concerns, Gargaon College organized an online workshop on issues related to gender sensitization on Saturday.
The workshop, inaugurated by Principal of Gargaon College and noted academician, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, was held with the objective of creating gender sensitization by understanding the social and cultural constructions of gender, the laws and policies required towards achieving gender equality with an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. The programme was organized by Women Cell (GCTU), in association with IQAC and Department of Chemistry, Gargaon College. It was coordinated by Dr Pakiza Begum, Assistant Secretary, Women Cell (GCTU), Gargaon College. Pimily Langthasa, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology and Upama Saikia, Guest Lecturer, Department of Political Science, Gargaon College were the resource persons.
The first speaker gave a talk on the topic 'Women: A Key Differentiator towards Gender Equality' where she discussed about gender equality and equality, gender roles and identity, gender policies and challenges in achieving gender equality. She explained how gender sensitization plays a very significant role in achieving gender equality, how it plays a role in dismantling the systemic gender biases and sexism. She further added that evaluation of all public service policies, programmes and activities can be done so that the gender sensitive public services becomes effective in planning, implementation and monitoring of reforms.
The second speaker's talk was on 'Laws and Practicalities: Understanding Women Rights in India'. She emphasized the constitutional rights regarding women and focused on some recent examples of some amendments of Acts regarding women in India. She further discussed various schemes of Assam Government which have been adopted for the protection and promotion of women rights. She also pointed out that on certain grounds, the scenario was different, which could be understood from recent reports of increasing crime against women in India. The speaker said that the need of the hour was to change people's mindset with the changing transformation from the rights to protection and from discrimination to dignity and respect.
