NAGAON: Over 15 per cent poisonous formalin has been found in fish imported from outside the State to the local fish markets here at Nagaon. Besides, the presence of 0.003 percent cadmium, 0.15 percent arsenic are also found in fish imported from outside the State to the local fish markets here. It was found in a recent study conducted by a special team from Department of Biology, Nowgong College (autonomous).
The study was carried out within three months by the team consisting of a group of research students of the department concerned under leadership of professors Dr Bhuban Chandra Chutiya, Dr Lalit Mohan Goswami, Dr Jyotishmita Das, Dr Priyanki Sarma and Dr Manosh Pratim Bora.
In a press note issued by the institution on Tuesday afternoon here that the students collected samples from various local fish markets across the district and examined all the samples in all aspects at local laboratory as well as at the laboratory in Guwahati during which the research team got the confirmation about the presence of those poisonous substance in fish available in local fish markets here. Dr Bhuban Chandra Chutiya, coordinator to Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college asserted that the study was carried out with an aim to make people aware of the quality of food items rather to create panic among the people of the district.
