Owner of Hotel Sapphire arrested for illegal storage of liquor in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: In an unprecedented and sensational move by the Tinsukia Excise Department, Sashi Choudhury, owner of Hotel Sapphire of Chirwapatty Tinsukia, has been arrested for illegal storage/possession/consumption of liquor in the hotel premises after registering case no TSK(S) Excise Case No620/2020 corresponding to Excise Case No 45/2020 u/s 53(1) (a)/54/60/61B/63/64 of AE Amended Act 2018.
The CJM forwarded the accused to judicial remand on Tuesday. However, others named in the case- Kabita Choudhury, wife of Sashi Choudhury, Joy Kumar Jain and his son Himangshu Jain, Sushil Kumar Jain, event manager, and Kishore Sharma, the manager of the hotel, are reportedly absconding.
This development came to the fore after Sunil Mandal, a caterer contractor, was stabbed to death on December 9 by an inebriated security guard of the hotel and subsequently, huge liquor was recovered from the hotel during a marriage party. The district administration immediately ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
According to HimanJyoti Borah, Superintendent of Excise, Tinsukia, the accused confessed his guilt in the course of his interrogation before excise officials and was subsequently arrested. The other accused along with invitees would be arrested soon, said Borah.
