SILCHAR: In a bizarre incident, a 28-year-old patient, admitted at the ICU of Silchar Medical College and Hospital with apparent symptoms of psychological disorder, attempted suicide by jumping from ICU. The patient, identified as Hussain Ahmed Barbhuiyan, sustaining severe brain injuries following the failed suicide attempts, had once again been kept in the ICU.

The incident raised serious concerns about the security set-up of the SMCH. Saibur, brother of the patient alleged that the SMCH had failed in providing security to its patients.

Sources in the SMCH said, Hussain Ahmed, from Lakhirbond, Hailakandi was admitted to the SMCH after he reportedly consumed poison on January 27. Since the youth was restless and unable to be managed in the male ward, he was shifted to the ICU. The next day he showed improvement after psychiatric consultation. But at night Hussain turned violent as he ran towards the window. He even attacked the attending doctor and paramedic staff and finally jumped from the ICU. SMCH authority had initiated an in-house investigation.
