BOKO: A peace committee was formed in Upper Tarabari (Assam) to settle the recent border issue, in the presence of administration of both states on Wednesday.

On Monday night, some Assam supporters fled in fear as some Meghalaya supporters had threatened them. Around 150 Garo tribal people, including old women, pregnant women and children, fled from their village in the Upper Tarabari area.

On Wednesday, a team which included Boko PS Officer in-charge Phanindra Nath, Boko revenue circle officer Diwas Bordoloi, Hahim Outpost in-charge Bikram Basumatary, Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills District Sub-inspector Goalon K. Sangma and a team of the All Rabha Students' Union (ARSU) with CRPF, Assam and Meghalaya Police personnel met at the Upper Tarabari village playground under Boko LAC in Kamrup district. The team organized a meeting with the people of both Assam and Meghalaya. People from Watre Rongchang, Balsrik, Walkam of Upper Tarabari area took part in the meeting.

Meghalaya Police officer Goalon K. Sangma presided over the meeting and he urged the public to maintain peace. The police officers of both states assured that necessary action would be taken in future if any border dispute arose.

The Meghalaya supporters requested the team to free the three persons who were arrested a week ago for extorting Assam supporters. Regarding this, Boko PS OC Phanindra Nath told the public that arrangements would be made to release them as per law. In the meeting, a six-member peace committee was constituted. According to Boko Circle Officer Diwas Bordoloi, this peace committee will handle all the border-related issues in the Upper Tarabari area and they will be supervised by the both Assam and Meghalaya administration. The president of the peace committee is Luwin Marak, secretary is Rottal Sangma and members are Marjan Sangma, Lingbat Marak, Barminton Sangma, Kraison Marak.

Boko Circle Officer Diwas Bordoloi said that the people who are living in the temporary shelter camp in Jarihat, will be rehabilitated by the Kamrup administration.

Meanwhile, Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council executive members Sumit Rabha, Panchami Rabha and Frylin R. Marak distributed clothes and other necessary commodities to the people who are living in the temporary camp at Jarihat. Jarihat ARSU secretary Barun Rabha requested the government to settle the border issue as soon as possible otherwise such kinds of fratricidal clashes would continue in the area.
