LAKHIMPUR: The local people of Ghilamora under the Lakhimpur district have demanded exemplary punishment for the alleged killers of Pinku Gogoi. In this connection, the people of Dhenukhona village gheraoed the Ghilamora Police Station and staged a protest in support of their demand.

Notably, the body of Pinku Gogoi (26), son of Tikendra Gogoi, resident of the Dhenukhona village, was recovered under mysterious circumstances on July 14 by the side of the Machkhowa-Dhakuakhana connecting road at Batomari under Ghilamora Police Station. The family member of the victim and the local people of the village raised complaints by terming Pinku's death to be a murder. Then Ghilamora Police registered a case vide No. 55/2023/302/34/IPC and launched the operation.

In this connection, Ghilamora Police detained five youths named Chiraj Gogoi (27), Koushik Chetia (26), son of Deben Chetia, Moridhol Ghat Gaon, Dhemaji, Dimpal Gogoi (27), son of Bhava Gogoi, Dhenukhona, Dipankar Baruah (27), son of Manoj Kumar Baruah, Gowal Gaon, Dhemaji and Jyoti Gogoi, son of Badan Gogoi, Chapori Gaon, Dhemaji for interrogation. As per the preliminary inquiry of the Police, Pinku took part in a feast with the youths at the residence of Chiraj Gogoi. Then his body was recovered from the place around two kilometres away from Chiraj Gogoi's residence. A bike was also found near the body in a mysterious condition. It is known that the detained youths admitted to the killing of Pinku Gogoi while Ghilamora OC Chandan Das, SI Hemanta Konwar, and Dhakuakhana Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Soumarjyoti Bhuyan interrogated them.

On Saturday, Ghilamora Police arrested the five youths and attempted to produce them before court. On receiving the information, around five hundred people from Dhenukhona village gheraoed the Ghilamora Police Station and rocked the Police Station premises by demanding capital punishment for the alleged killers. However, Ghilamora Police, led by Dhakuakhana SDPO Soumarjyoti Bhuyan, shifted the accused youths to judicial custody under tight security. The conscious people of Ghilamora have expressed satisfaction with the success of the Ghilamora Police in arresting the five culprits within 48 hours.
